Growing Business Together
Solea Water’s approach to tackling the global water crisis is two-fold: first, we organize shoe drives, fundraising campaigns and volunteer expeditions with partners, donors and committed volunteers from all over the United States in order to finance projects on the ground in Latin America and the Caribbean. Second, we use these resources to identify holistic solutions for implementing safe, affordable and effective clean-water projects with affected communities.
We place special emphasis on the importance of shoe drives in raising funds for the fight against water poverty. Not only do the shoe drives provide the funding for water programs, but the shoes enter a secondary market and become available to micro-businesses and entrepreneurs in developing countries. Entrepreneurs have the opportunity to purchase your donated shoes and resell them in markets in places like Guatemala, Haiti, and others. People in these countries then have the ability to purchased used shoes at a much more affordable price than buying new shoes.
This process makes obvious that a little recycling and reuse can have a far more meaningful impact on people’s lives all across the world.
Rather than dictate solutions from afar and above, we work closely with local advocates and community members to determine which water solutions best fit their needs and how, once implemented, they will be able to independently manage them going forward. One model of doing this has been the construction of windmill aqueducts that filter clean water from centrally located wells before delivering it to outlying rural communities via taps that reach the residential communities’ doorsteps. Another model of this is a team of well drillers in Haiti that, provided with a drilling rig and tools, can go to a new community and drill a well or even repair a broken water system. Each of these are built with and subsequently operated by community members on the ground. For more information about shoe drives at your business, church or school contact Joyce Cannon at 618-567-5305
